Everyone should be aware of the dangers of drinking and driving. Seasoned adults should almost certainly know that providing beer to teenagers who will later drive is not a good idea. That's what a 60-year-old Pennsylvania woman is accused of doing, and now she's pleaded guilty to various charges that will likely land her in prison.
While she did no face charges related to wrongful death, she did plead guilty to four counts of corruption of minors, as well as reckless endangerment and 17 citations of serving alcohol to minors.
The charges stem from a graduation party in June 2010 at which the woman allegedly served a half-keg of beer to her son's teenage guests. After the party, three of the teens were killed in a car crash about a mile away.
According to Fox News, it could not be directly proved that the beer the woman served caused the crash. The 19-year-old driver, who was one of the teens killed, had apparently consumed alcohol at another location before heading to the graduation party. Therefore, the woman avoided an involuntary manslaughter charge.
The woman is facing a maximum sentence of 45 years in prison. Fox News reports that she probably won't spend that much time in jail, but the Westmoreland County District Attorney says he is asking for a prison term because "adults have to realize there are going to be horrible consequences giving alcohol to minors."
The woman will be sentenced in about three months.
